The overall objective of the NetProtect project is to prototype a flexible and multi-lingual third-party filtering solution addressing concerns of European teachers and parents. It is anticipated that this tool will mainly be used to prevent children from accessing pornography and violent sites, no matter the language (English, French, German, Greek or Spanish) used by the site. To address this objective, the NetProtect consortium will carry out the following tasks :

  • Review of filtering tools and analysis of user requirements: this activity will consist in reviewing the commercial solutions available for parents and teachers wishing to install an Internet filtering products and in identifying the user requirements to be considered during the course of the project.

  • Prototype of a European filtering tool: this activity will consist in setting up the NetProtect prototype by selecting and assembling altogether various COTS tool, from translation products to filtering products in order to take into account the variety of multi-lingual differences in Europe to specialised filtering tools.

  • Benchmark and user assessment: this activity will deal with the assessment of the NetProtect prototype. This assessment will be carried out both by technicians who have an experience of filtering products and by end-users (parents and teachers). All aspects (installation, performance, documentation, etc.) will be considered.

  • Final report and recommendation for next phase: this activity will conclude on the results achieved during the project. The prototype will be demonstrated to the experts of the European Commission. Finally, the consortium will define the next steps for developing and releasing a full-scale product.
